Nobody can take it on the lam that Motorola's RAZR V3 was a huge commercial success. It had a lot going for it, including that tempting and slim profile. But in spite of its success in the market, there were still some things that needed to be addressed. The newest rendering of the RAZR for GSM networks, the RAZR V3i, is an evolutionary upgrade to the V3. It seems unequivocally obvious that Motorola was thinking "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" when they went about creating this upgrade.

The smooth V3i is an upgrade from the original RAZR V3.

For starters, the physical size of the V3i is the same as the V3, which is to say that it is about six tenths of an inch in thickness (about 14mm). Moment is also about the same at 3.4oz (97g). But this time around the V3i gets a new, gunmetal-hoary exterior with a cool, brushed pattern on the top half of the folder invent. The Motorola logo also now glows blue. Otherwise, apart from some minor cosmetic changes made to the outward and the flat but functional keypad, physically the V3i seems pretty much the same as the V3.

The basic features are also the same, with a few exceptions. The V3i supports all four of the GSM frequency bands, so it should toil most anywhere in the world (if you have international roaming on your GSM account). The V3i's internal antenna seemed to labour well--call audio quality was very good and we had no problems in weak signal areas. The big 262k color display appears to be the same--still nice and bright--and the exotic display is also the same, meaning it is functional but not at all awe inspiring. The battery in the V3i has been upgraded a wee bit and managed to power the handset for only just over 8 hours of talk time in our tests.

There is still no EDGE data advocate in the V3i, sadly, but the Bluetooth system is very good and supports data connections as well as headsets and car kits--though not in stereo. The camera's buyer interface has been updated to include a very easy system whereas the d-pad can change most all of the camera settings on the fly without the necessary for menus. The camera module itself has also been upgraded to a 1.2-megapixel example that generates nice looking photos with good color poise, even if the focus is a bit soft (especially for subjects closer than 4' to another place).

See the unlocked V3i open and closed.

Another upgrade is the inclusion of speaker-independent expression dialing and commands. With this system, there is no longer the need to train the phone for sundry contacts names. You just speak the command (such as "Name Dial"), and perceive it the name of the contact--it's that simple and works superbly. Another change that helps in making calls is a new multi-capacity fitting search mode for finding contacts, something people have been asking about for a dream of time. In some versions of the V3i you will also find Apple iTunes support, just like in the ROKR E1. There is a 100-at a bargain price a fuss limit, though, which is a shame since the new microSD memory card slot can imprison cards as large as 1 GB in size. The non-iTunes versions will not have a song limit when using the inaction Motorola media player.

    Pros:

  • Thin and sexy
  • Good mobile life
  • Bluetooth
  • Cons:

  • No EDGE support
  • Metal keypad is not for everybody
  • While not a bulky upgrade, the RAZR V3i gets enough boosts in the right places to insure its spot as one of the most popular mobile phones in the world. The added features are all very pleasingly to have, and the hold-over features from the old V3 still work as well as they did the first time around. If you like the RAZR V3, you will in all likelihood love it in the new RAZR V3i version.

    Product Description

The Moto Razr V3 is expertly crafted to broadcast exceptional performance. Inside the ultra-thin design are advanced features like MPEG4 video playback, Bluetooth® wireless technology, a digital camera and more. And with the unerringness-cut keypad, minimalist styling and metal finish, the V3 looks reasonable as beautiful as it performs. The real difference is in the details. See who’s vocation, in color, without opening your phone — the large internal exhibit is complemented by an impressive external display. The precision-cut metal keypad reacts to the lightest of touches. And the features you can't always see are in cooperation impressive, like quad-band GSM — for global calls where GSM network extensiveness and roaming agreements are present.

When the Motorola RAZR V3 was launched last year, I value most everybody, including Motorola itself, was quite surprised by how popular the handset turned out to be, bearing in mind the asking price. Its slim profile and sleek silver painted metal body proved to be just too much of a temptation for the world, and residents the world over jumped through hoops and over hurdles just to get one for their very own. Everybody was a big star with one of these!

    Black is beautiful.

Until, of course, Motorola gave 50 chic RAZR V3 BLK handsets to some real movie stars at the 77th Annual Institution Awards in February, 2005. All of a sudden, the silver RAZR demolished some of its shine. But once again, it is time for the masses to rejoice. Motorola is making the RAZR BLK on tap to all.

Of course it isn't just the color that makes the RAZR V3 BLK such a desirable handset. One reason that populace love it so is its size. It weighs only 3.35oz (95g), which is pretty berate for a phone that has a largely metal body. At 3.86" x 2.17" x .57" (98mm x 55mm x 14.5mm) in value, it is actually thinner than most candy bar style phones on the market. It can be slipped exactly into a shirt, suit, or pants pocket, as well as a purse, without being noticed.

There is so much more to the RAZR V3 BLK than its incarnate being, though. Certainly the primary purpose of any phone must be making phone calls, and in malevolence of its small stature, the RAZR V3 BLK managed a full 7 hours of talk moment in our tests - a very respectable showing. A related bonus is the fact that you can safe keeping the RAZR V3 BLK directly from your computer's USB port with the same type of mini-USB cable that you possibly already have for your digital camera. That's one less power adapter to pack in the suitcase. Pillar for all 4 GSM frequency bands means that the RAZR will work in San Francisco and New York perfectly as well as it will in Paris and London. The handset's internal antenna also proved to be a certain extent capable, offering up very good reception in weak signal areas.

Of speed some compromises had to be made to get all of this functionality into such a small package. The keypad, for example, is a very thin metal segment that offers less tactile feedback than most, though it makes up for that somewhat by looking illusory in the dark, thanks to its cool blue back light. While quite usable, it might take a bit of getting against to. No compromises were made with the main display, though: a nice 2.2" 65k color TFT module, with 176 x 220 pixel resolution. The external display is also feel ashamed, though only a 4k CSTN type.

The Motorola RAZR V3 BLK is thin and definitely in.

The built-in VGA camera proved itself to be one of the wagerer ones on the market, offering good contrast, color, and well- in most situations. The RAZR's polyphonic sound system also works quite well, and even allows you to use MP3 files as ringtones. So if you have a few dollars to spare in your stalk for looking like a movie star, Motorola has got just the element you need. Luckily, the RAZR V3 BLK has the brains to back up the beauty.

Everybody was a talkie star with one of these!

    Black is beautiful.

Until, of course, Motorola gave 50 restricted RAZR V3 BLK handsets to some real movie stars at the 77th Annual University Awards in February, 2005. All of a sudden, the silver RAZR adrift some of its shine. But once again, it is time for the masses to rejoice. Motorola is making the RAZR BLK handy to all.

Of course it isn't just the color that makes the RAZR V3 BLK such a desirable handset. One object that people love it so is its size. It weighs only 3.35oz (95g), which is catchy light for a phone that has a largely metal body. At 3.86" x 2.17" x .57" (98mm x 55mm x 14.5mm) in scope, it is actually thinner than most candy bar style phones on the market. It can be slipped entirely into a shirt, suit, or pants pocket, as well as a purse, without being noticed.

There is so much more to the RAZR V3 BLK than its carnal being, though. Certainly the primary purpose of any phone must be making phone calls, and in do a number on of its small stature, the RAZR V3 BLK managed a full 7 hours of talk once upon a time in our tests - a very respectable showing. A related bonus is the fact that you can bid the RAZR V3 BLK directly from your computer's USB port with the same type of mini-USB cable that you quite already have for your digital camera. That's one less power adapter to pack in the suitcase. Assist for all 4 GSM frequency bands means that the RAZR will work in San Francisco and New York lawful as well as it will in Paris and London. The handset's internal antenna also proved to be altogether capable, offering up very good reception in weak signal areas.

Of execution some compromises had to be made to get all of this functionality into such a small package. The keypad, for example, is a very thin metal piece that offers less tactile feedback than most, though it makes up for that somewhat by looking extraordinary in the dark, thanks to its cool blue back light. While quite usable, it might take a bit of getting old to. No compromises were made with the main display, though: a nice 2.2" 65k color TFT constituent, with 176 x 220 pixel resolution. The external display is also go red, though only a 4k CSTN type.

The Motorola RAZR V3 BLK is thin and definitely in.

The built-in VGA camera proved itself to be one of the larger ones on the market, offering good contrast, color, and blurry in most situations. The RAZR's polyphonic sound system also works quite well, and even allows you to use MP3 files as ringtones. So if you have a few dollars to slender in your quest for looking like a movie star, Motorola has got by the skin of one's teeth the thing you need. Luckily, the RAZR V3 BLK has the brains to back up the beauty.

    Motorola RAZR making a comeback?

We are speculating, but it's all based on a teaser video from Moto HQ which tells us a new instrument is being announced on that date. And with constant references to razor blades, plus it being faster and thinner, there's only one end we can really draw.

Then, of course, there's the pics leaked to This Is My Next which almost give the position away completely.

The screen is said to be 4.5in across with an 8MP camera crammed on the back. Processor-wise, we're expecting to see a dual-seed 1.2GHz chip and 1GB of RAM. Gorilla Glass is also mooted which is lately as well as we imagine any smartphone as thin as a RAZR is likely to be charming fragile.

The question remains what the phone will be called in the UK - the names of Motorola Droid HD and Motorola Spyder have been mooted by some, with the latter making the most faculty for us Brit-dwellers, given our apathy to the Droid moniker.

Either way, fair a week to go. October is shaping up to be a very exciting month indeed.
